Tooth Fairy Tips

As our family embarks on the adventures of the tooth fairy, I've discovered a few tips to add to the enchantment of the big event.

Tooth Fairy Pillow:
In anticipation of the first missing tooth, give your child a special tooth fairy pillow or box. This ensures the tiny tooth is safe.  Chasing Fireflies has a wonderful selection. Here are some of my favorites:

Prepare for Tooth Fairy Visit
On the day of the big visit, ask your child to clean up their room. The tooth fairy likes things nice and tidy!  OK... maybe Mom has a hidden agenda on this one, but it adds to the excitement.
My son was attentive to all the details. He was concerned the tooth fairy would set off the security alarm.  He cleared a path to his bed for the Tooth Fairy's journey. He even announced promptly at 7:00pm that he was going to bed, so the tooth fairy wouldn't pass him by!  Part of this was certainly inspired by the allure of the fairy visit, but my little one is also quite an entrepreneur. He was especially excited about the earning potential!

Personal Touches:
Help your child write a letter to the tooth fairy.  The tooth fairy loves to sign it in fancy fairy scroll, fairy stickers and sprinkles of glitter.  There are also many free downloadable tooth fairy letters and certificates on-line. Here are a few of my favorite sites:
E-mail from the Tooth Fairy:
Tooth Fairy Fun:
Ultimate Tooth Fairy
Tooth Fairy City

Special Penny:
On the momentous occasion of the first lost tooth, the tooth fairy can include a lucky penny minted the year of your child's birth or the year the first tooth is lost.
"The tooth fairy
 has come your way
with a lucky tooth fairy penny
on this very special day."

Tooth Fairy Scavenger Hunt:
To add a fun twist, the tooth fairy tucks a note in the pillow with clues for a treasure hunt.
"This Tooth Fairy Pillow is not obsolete
But the Tooth Fairy has a different treat.
In this next clue,
your reward is waiting for you."
Creative hiding places include "In your favorite pair of shoes" or "Check your juice glass this morning"

Take of lots of photos of your little one's toothless grin. This is definitely one for the scrapbooks.
As always, embrace the special moment, and have fun!

Summertime Treats... Corn-on-the-Cob Cupcakes

Sweeten your Summer cook-outs and kick off July 4th weekend with these fun corn "cobcakes".

My son proudly displays his creations!

All you need...

White and yellow jelly beans
White frosted cupcakes
Yellow Starburst candies (for the pat of butter)
Corn holders

For each ear, press jelly bean kernels onto three frosted cupcakes.
Line up cupcakes, and add a corn holder to each end of the cob.
For butter pat, microwave a Starburst for 8 seconds.
Stetch it into a melted butter shape, and place on center cupcake.

Simple, fun and easy to make. Enjoy, and have a fabulous fourth!

Hair Today. Gone Tomorrow!

I've been contemplating trimming my little one's hair.  I love his head full of gorgeous, blond curls. Well, my five-year-old made that decision for me. After a long day of juggling the boys, auditions and rush hour traffic, I was exhausted.  I stepped away for a moment to take off my makeup.  When I left, the boys were contently snuggled on the bed watching TV.  For some reason, my older one was suddenly inspired to cut hair. He dug into the desk drawer and retrieved the scissors.  He chopped off the center chunk of his bangs. Then, like Edward Scissorhands, he went to town on his brother's hair. There were fistfuls of blond locks on the floor, and my little one was bald with a row of curls at the bottom. It looked like a toddler mullet. My little one had a big smile on his face. He was pleased with his new look.  My oldest one was hiding. When he finally reappeared, his lower lip was quivering, and he told me, "Mommy, don't be mad.  I left his curls."  I rushed them to the salon where they recreated my oldest son's hairstyle into a spiky do.  For my little one, the stylist just smiled and said, "It will grow back."
BEFORE THE HAIRCUT:
This photo is the night before when my little one got into a bag of marshmallows.

AFTER THE HAIRCUT:

The moral of the story is never trust a five-year-old.  We've had many discussions about scissor safety, but you never know when inspiration might strike!

Run for the Roses Festivities

The 136th Kentucky Derby runs this Saturday, May 1. There's something about the cuisine, attire and history that's always appealed to me.  For years, my husband and I would stop by the local tracks and place a bet.  I used to have these amazing vibes and always pick the winner. Certain names would just stand out to me.  In the last few years, I've lost all credibility.  Since we've added kids to the mix, we now gather around the TV and pick our favorites. My boys love any excuse to cheer and shout!  Here are a few of my favorite recipes to help celebrate.  Enjoy the festivities!

Classic Mint Juleps

The Mint Julep has been the traditional beverage of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby for nearly a century.  Mixes are available, but I love this recipe.
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
16 mint sprigs, lightly crushed
8 cups finely crushed ice
1 cup bourbon
Mint sprigs
Bring sugar and 1 cup water to a boil in a small saucepan. Cook 4 minutes or until sugar dissolves. Remove sugar syrup from heat. Cool completely.  Place 2 crushed mint sprigs in the bottom of each of 8 glasses.  Add 1 cup crushed ice, 2 tablespoons sugar syrup, and 2 tablespoons bourbon to each glass.  Garnish with mint sprigs.
8 servings

Kentucky Chocolate Nut Tartlets
Pastry:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon baking powder
2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
4 to 5 tablespoons ice water
Cooking spray
Filling:
3 tablespoons semisweet chocolate chips
3 tablespoons chopped, toasted pecans
2 1/2 tablespoons sugar
3 1/2 tablespoons light-colored corn syrup
1 tablespoon egg substitute
1 tablespoon bourbon
1 teaspoon all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
dash of salt
2 teaspoons bourbon (optional)

For pastry: lightly spoon flour into a dry measuring cup.  Level with a knife.  Combine flour, 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and the baking powder in a food processor.  Pulse 3 times.  Add the shortening.  Pulse 4 or 5 times or until combined.  Place flour mixture in a bowl.  Gradually, sprinkle ice water over the flour mixture.  Toss until moist.  Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and gently knead 3 to 4 times.  Press mixture into a 4 inch disk.  Place between 2 sheets of plastic wrap. Chill 30 minutes.  Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Roll the dough into an 11 inch circle. Remove plastic.  Cut dough into 18 circles.  Fit dough into miniature nonstick muffin cups coated with cooking spray.  Gently press dough into bottom and sides of cups.  For filling:  divide chocolate and pecans evenly among muffin cups.  Combine 2 1/2 tablespoons sugar and next 6 ingredients in a small bowl.  Stir well with a whisk.  Divide sugar mixture evenly among cups.  Bake at 375 for 15 minutes or until pastry is lightly browned and the filling is set.  Run a knife around each tartlet.  Remove from pan.  Lightly brush tartlets with 2 teaspoons bourbon, if desired.  Cool completely.
This recipe makes 1 1/2 dozen tartlets.

Happy 101 Award

Thank you to Ellie-Town for recognizing Embraced Chaos with the Happy 101 Award.  Stop by her lovely site for the adventures of raising two adorable girls.  I love the slices of life. Thanks again to Ellie-Town!

So here are the rules of the Happy 101 Award:
1. Copy and paste the award on your blog.
2.  List who gave the award to you and use a link to her blog (or hyperlink)
3.  List 10 things that make you happy.
4.  Pass the award on to other bloggers and visit their blog to let them know about the award.

It's nice to take a few minutes to appreciate the good things in life.  Here's my Top 10:
1.  The top of my list is of course my boys. They have brought a joy into my life that I never thought possible. I love their sweet faces, their laughs, and all the silly things they do.  I think I'm having withdrawals right now. I've been working on a video shoot all week, so they are out of town with Grandma and Grandad.  The house is so quiet...  not a home.  They get back today. I'm sure there will soon be moments when they won't be at the top of my happy list :) but my happiest times are with my family.

2.  As much as I adore my children, date nights with my husband make me happy.  I love sipping a martini with jazz music and adult talk.

3.  The adventures of traveling make me happy. I love trying something new and exploring "out of the way" destinations.

4.  I'm always happy at the beach.  There is nothing like sinking my toes in the sand with a Pina Colada in hand watching the sunset.

5.  I love girl getaways.  It really makes my happy to giggle and gossip with my best girlfriends. Girls that know the real you... pre-kids and pre-husband.  Just you.  What a wonderful escape!

6.  Although few and far between, a good, uninterrupted night's sleep makes me happy.

7.  Acting and being part of a creative process makes me happy. It gives me an identity outside of "just Mom".

8.  Happiness is getting pampered at a luxurious spa. Massage, facial, mani, pedi... the works.  Throw in champagne and a spa lunch, and I'm extra happy!

9. Shopping has to be on my Happy Top 10.  I especially love finding bargains. I just snagged two gorgeous $200 retail Juicy Couture tops for $29 each. Very happy!

10.  Any reason to celebrate makes me happy.  I love holidays and making memories with my family.  Creative parties, thoughtful gifts and lots of pictures wrap up my Happy List!

Now for sites that make me happy, I would like to award the Happy 101 Award to:

KIM'S STITCH IN TIME BIRTHDAY TEE REVIEW

For our son's second birthday, we planned a visit to the Winnie the Pooh breakfast at the Grand Floridian.  He's a big Pooh Bear fan, so it was the obvious party theme.   Kim's Stitch in Time created this adorable, Winnie the Pooh tee for the occasion.

Kim's Stitch in Time offers unique, custom birthday tees and onesies.  From Mickey to Thomas to all of the Princesses, you'll find a cute top for your little one. She also just added fun vacation outfits.  Perfect if you are planning a trip to Disney World!  Shirts can be personalized too.

Kim was wonderful to work with. We chatted about the theme, and she suggested a few fabric options.  Then, she custom designed the tee and mailed it in plenty of time. The shirt is 100% cotton and good quality. I would suggest ordering a size larger just to make sure it fits.  Visit her site and enjoy her creative designs.

The Mess of Boys

I am amazed at the mess my boys can create.
They are miniature tornadoes that devastate a room in minutes.
Just a typical day in our household...

My little one "fed" the fish. Have you ever tried to vacuum fish food. Not fun!

Then, he took fistfuls of dirt out of the planter... just because.

My older one created an outfit from his brother's diapers.

He unraveled a roll of toilet paper and stuffed his brother's shirt to make him look fat.

On top of that, he cut green construction paper into strips to make "grass" for our family room,

I'm cursing the Easter Bunny for putting a bath crayon in the Easter Basket.
I'm sure he thought it was a great alternative to sweet treats, but those things should be banned.
Now, I'm off to clean bath art off of the Jacuzzi tub!

Chaos of the Day. Beep!

Just when I was thinking that my life wasn't that chaotic... today happened.  My family and I woke up to a beeping sound.  It was a wonderful mystery to solve. My boys raced around the house. We finally found the culprit... the fire alarm in the hallway.  My husband is "mechanically challenged".  There's just no other way to put it.  He balanced on a chair and put the battery in. We waited for a second, and BEEP. It didn't work. He put the battery in wrong.  When he tried to get it out, he broke the battery door.  The alarm began to beep louder which terrified my toddler. He began to scream at the top of his lungs.  My husband fiddled with it a bit, and he decided that he couldn't deal with it. He would just fix it later. What?! That is unacceptable!  I couldn't function with the constant BEEP.  I decided to take charge, and I dragged our huge ladder in from the garage.  Of course, I bashed the walls in the process, and my toddler continued to scream.  The damage to the alarm had been done, and it would need to be replaced.  I called our home warranty company only to find out that our warranty had just expired.  I sent in the paperwork, but apparently, they never processed it.  I was forwarded to another office which was closed.  BEEP!  Scream!  I frantically called a repairman that was working on our garage door opener (also broken).  He asked if he could stop by Saturday.  A big resounding NO!  I would have a nervous breakdown by then.  He finally gave in, and we set an appointment for Noon. In the meantime, my boys scattered all of their tools throughout the house. They banged on the walls and "helped fix the alarm".  What a wonderful mess.

I had to ignore the BEEP while I got ready for a Cracker Barrel audition.  On the inside I felt like chaos, but I had to look cute, happy and carefree!  I don't think I pulled it off.  For the audition, I sat at a table with three other actors.  We just had to pretend like we were eating at Cracker Barrel.  It wasn't Shakespeare.   I kicked off the scene by saying how good the chicken and dumplings were.  One of the actors responded that the last time he had chicken and dumplings at Cracker Barrel, there wasn't any chicken".  Hello?  Aren't we auditioning for a Cracker Barrel commercial?  Trying to move on, I just smiled and said that the dumplings were the best part.  Then, I suggested peanut butter pie for dessert. Another actor piped in that they didn't like peanut butter pie. What? It's called acting. Fake it. You don't really have to eat it, and if you do, you get paid well for it.  I climbed back in my car for the drive home only to realize that my air conditioning wasn't working and my tire warning light was on.  Lovely.  Now, I'm just sitting and waiting for the alarm repair man.  BEEP!

Mommy on The Bachelor

I have something to confess. I feel like a horrible parent.  My 5-year-old son loves watching The Bachelor.  Of course, we fast forward through all the kissing scenes. He thinks that's gross, but he really looks forward to the show.  On Mondays, he wakes up and declares that it's Bachelor Day.  Recently, he's been asking me to be on The Bachelor. I explained that Mommy is married to Daddy, and I don't want to be on The Bachelor.  I've already found true love.  Then, my husband piped in that he could be the next bachelor. My son thought about it for a moment.  Then, he walked over and whispered into my husband's ear, "OK Daddy, you can be on The Bachelor, but make sure you give Mommy the rose!"

Experience the scrumptious taste of natural, whole organic foods prepared by award-winning spa chef, Chef Procacci.

What a fabulous baby shower gift!
In the Momilicious program, you receive breakfast, lunch, dinner, two snacks and a low-calorie mini-dessert daily.   In addition, you get customization of dietary preferences, 100% quality and freshness guaranteed, easy-to-follow weekly menus, adjustable calorie control,  nationwide delivery and nutritional coaching.  The focus is proper daily nutrition for Mommy and baby, and the service cost is $49.95 per day.

Healthy Chef Creations also creates healthy, delicious meals for the whole family. I've had the pleasure of sampling the tasty offerings.  Choose from a varied selection including banana and flaxseed pancakes, organic acai fruit and yogurt parfait, portabella wrap, spa chicken salad, grilled filet mignon, and plantain crusted chicken with papaya salsa.  One of my favorites  is the Mediterranean Plate, an array of all-natural hummus, Turkish eggplant dip and fresh quinoa tabbouleh. Customize your menu for weight loss, allergies or dietary concerns including gluten free, dairy free, vegan and no salt. Healthy Chef Creations avoids artificial flavoring, pesticide-treated produce, coloring agents, chemicals, preservatives, hydrogenated oils, trans-fatty acids and refined sugars. Organic children's meals and baby food are also available.

The meals can be delivered anywhere in the US.  Then, just heat and eat!  I love the convenience.  The containers are microwavable and oven safe, and they come with easy-to-read instructions. They are delivered fresh on Friday and are guaranteed to stay fresh all week.
